Oblation Furnace

"Oblation Furnace" is also known as "Holy Monument Pavilion," "Respect For Holiness Pavilion," "Word Paper Pavilion," and "Cherish Words Pavilion."

An old Hakka adage instructs farmers to plow the fields when there are clear skies and to read when it rains. In every Hakka household, a waste-paper basket could be found underneath the family altar. An elderly waste-paper collector visited homes to collect waste-paper for incineration at the pavilion, which was a sign of respect for scholars and knowledge. Therefore, the pavilion is a symbol of the Hakka people's respect for the written word.
